Info About the Song

Australia has some of the strangest and unique animals on earth. The song Weird Australian Animals was written based on the fun facts found in the YouTube video from Curiosity Capers. Here’s a quick summary of the facts that you’ll learn about in both the video above and the song.
  1. Thorny Devil: This spiky reptile blends into deserts, eats ants, and collects morning dew with its thorns.
  2. Platypus: This egg-laying mammal has a duckbill for finding food with electroreceptors and venomous spurs.
  3. Short-beaked Echidna: Another monotreme, this mammal lays eggs and uses its long snout to eat ants and termites. It curls into a ball for protection.
  4. Tasmanian Devil: This fierce marsupial has a bad odor and eats anything, including roadkill and other carnivores' prey.
  5. Emu: The second tallest bird, emus are flightless with tiny wings but can run fast and swim. They have extra eyelids for dusty environments and can drink for 10 minutes straight.

We hope you enjoy using these videos and songs in the classroom or at home to learn all about the weird and wonderful animals that you can find in Australia.

Song Lyrics

Hi, I’m a Thorny Devil I might sound bad, but I’m not evil.
I’ve got camouflage all over my skin, I live in the desert where I blend in
I got pointy thorns all over my back, which help me survive, when others attack
I’m one of a kind, I’m really unique, I love to eat ants, they’re a tasty treat
I’m a platypus, I’ve got good looks, and if you’ve read your history books
People once believed, I wasn’t real. I’m an egg-laying mammal, with a duck bill
A beaver’s tail, and otters feet, I’m an animal you wanna meet
But don’t get too close! I got venomous spurs, which can be deadly to small critters
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals

G’day everyone, I’m an echidna, I also eat ants and I’m a good digger
My claws at the front, and feet at the back are very handy for digging up snacks
I’m a monotreme, like my platypus friend, which means we’re mammals, who lay eggs
And when I’m scared you might only see my spiny spikes protecting me
And we’re the second tallest birds alive, our wings are small and we cannot fly
Our emu legs, give powerful kicks and help us run, really quick
We eat insects, fruit, and plants and drink lots of water when we get the chance
With all that dirt and all that dust our see through eyelids are a must
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals

Woah! What’s that stink? Oh, it’s me. What did you think!
I’m a little bit crazy, with bad hygiene, but I’m an animal, so don’t blame me
I’ll eat anything, anywhere, I’m a Tasmanian Devil yeah!
I eat animals, dead or alive, I love to scream and get in fights

We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals
We are weird Australian Animals

Info About the Saltwater Crocodiles

A saltwater crocodile with its jaw wide openSaltwater Crocodiles | Educational song by Caper Kids Music
The saltwater crocodile, the world's biggest reptile, is a sneaky and powerful predator. They can hold their breath underwater for hours and have the strongest bite of any animal. They use the sun to warm their bodies and build nests that control the temperature of their eggs, which decides if the hatchling will be male or female. While mostly found in saltwater areas, they can also be found in freshwater habitats. Be cautious around crocodile territory and follow safety warnings to avoid these impressive yet dangerous creatures.

Lyrics for the Educational Song, Saltwater Crocodiles

I am a saltwater crocodile sneaking through the water gonna catch myself a meal
I can stay well hidden for about 8 hours with my nostrils poking out to breath

Snap Snap attack and watch your back for saltwater crocodiles with 66 big sharp teeth
Snap Snap attack and watch your back for saltwater crocodiles they crush food instantly

Birds, fish, turtles, they are all on the menu at the saltwater croc cafe
And when I catch my dinner I do a death roll in the water so my food can’t get away
Snap Snap attack and watch your back for saltwater crocodiles with 66 big sharp teeth
Snap Snap attack and watch your back for saltwater crocodiles they crush food instantly

I’m a cold blooded reptile so I use the sun’s ray to heat the thick tough scales on me
And if I get a little hot then I cool down in the water or find some shade under a tree

Snap Snap attack and watch your back for saltwater crocodiles with 66 big sharp teeth
Snap Snap attack and watch your back for saltwater crocodiles they crush food instantly

Song Lyrics for Hey Cassowary

Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary.
Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary
Out in the rainforest somewhere near a beach is a bird, scratching round with dinosaur like feet
In Australia’s wet tropics, or Papua New Guinea, there’s a strong and fearsome bird called a cassowary
Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary.
Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary

Standing tall on two long legs, the cassowary’s stronger than its emu friends
But it is slightly shorter than its emu mates, it’s 1.8 metres tall taking second place
Don’t be mistaken, bout this ancient bird, their legs are strong, claws are sharp and kicks can really hurt
With one big kick, this animal can kill, crush your bones, cut you up, or peck you like a drill

Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary
Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary
For 60 million years this bird has been alive, eating fruits, eating plants and insects that it finds
And sometimes when it’s hungry and there’s nothing else to it, it eats its own fruity poo as a little treat
Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary
Hey Cassowary O Cassowary you so look nice but you are kind of scary
Look nice but you are kind of scary

What a beautiful day
(What a beautiful day)

Uh oh, what’s that!
One big black nose
Two round soft ears
Fluffy gray fur
It's a koala, not a bear

Quick, get the binoculars!
Look straight up, in the tree
There's a koala, looking at me
Be very quiet, get the phone
Call the family, back at home
Take a picture, have a look
Zoom in closer, that looks good
Remember that, it's not a bear
It's just a koala up there
Our fluffy marsupial friend

Hey Diddle Diddle

The history of "Hey Diddle Diddle" is a bit of a mystery! Here's what we know:

  • Ancient Origins? Some theories suggest the rhyme could be very old, possibly dating back to the Middle Ages (think knights and castles!). This is because the image of a cat playing a fiddle appears in artwork from that time.
  • Shakespearean Mention: The phrase "Hey Diddle Diddle" itself appears in some of William Shakespeare's plays from the 16th century, but it wasn't used as part of a nursery rhyme yet.
  • First Published Version: The first version closest to the rhyme we know today popped up in 1765, printed in a collection called "Mother Goose's Melodies."
  • Musical Mystery: The melody we sing today wasn't documented until 1870 by a composer who collected nursery rhymes.
  • Meaning Unknown: No one knows for sure what the rhyme means! There are theories that connect it to everything from constellations to historical figures, but none are proven.

So, "Hey Diddle Diddle" might be much older than we think, but the exact details of its origin are lost to time. That doesn't stop it from being a fun and catchy rhyme to share with children!

Traditional Lyrics

Hey diddle diddle

The cow jumped over the moon
The little boy laughed to see such fun
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Lyrics to Caper Kids Music Version

Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such fun
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

It’s a crazy fairy tale about the moon
with a cat and a fiddle and a little silver spoon
That ran away with a dish
It all happened so soon
And a dog that laughed it’s strange but true

It’s a crazy crazy crazy little song

They chased through the clouds, a whirlwind of fur, The cat with his fiddle, the spoon in a blur. The dog’s belly aching from laughter's delight, sung out to the stars, what a glorious sight.

They climbed on a comet, its tail a bright streak, they flew past the planets at a blistering speed. The moon, a giant cheese, hung low in the sky, And the cat, with a grin, winked a mischievous eye.

It’s a crazy crazy crazy little song

He scraped on his fiddle, a jig full of glee, As the spoon, like a dancer, spun light on the sea. The dog, singing tunes, joined a cosmic ballet, A symphony of wonder, a celestial display.

It’s a crazy crazy crazy little song

Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little boy laughed to see such fun
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

My Highland Goat - Lyrics and Chords

Lyrics and Chords
(first round can be sung as an echo with a leader and group)

My highland goat
Was feeling fine
He ate three shirts
Off my back line

I took a stick
Gave him a whack
And tied him to
The railway track

The whistle blew
The train drew nigh
My highland goat
Was sure to die

I took a knife
And cut that rope
And set him free
My highland goat

My highland goatie-oatie-oatie-oatie-oat
Was feeling finey-iney-iney-iney-ine
He ate three shirty-irty-irty-irty-irts
Off my back liney-iney-iney-iney-ine

I took a sticky-icky-icky-icky-ick
Gave him a whacky-acky-acky-acky--ack
And tied him tooey-ooey-ooey-ooey-oo
The railway tracky-acky-acky-acky-ack

The whistle blewie-ewie-ewie-ewie-ewe
The train drew nighey-ighey-ighey-ighey-igh
My highland goatie-oatie-oatie-oatie-oat
Was sure to die-ee-i-ee-i-ee-i-ee-i

I took a knifey-ifey-ifey-ifey-ife
And cut that ropey-opey-opey-opey-ope
And set him free-e-ee-e-ee-e-ee-e-ee
My highland goatie-oatie-oatie-oatie-oat

    About

This is a collection of my favourite songs, rhymes, riddles and poems. Many of them I remember from my childhood and many of them I have discovered since then.

I still sing many of these songs to this day, whether it is with my own children or the children that I teach at school. I find them a great means of stress relief both in and out of the classroom.

Most of these songs should be in the public domain. You will also find that there are multiple versions for each song or rhyme. Please feel free to share your variation, request some sheet music or inform me of any funny songs that should be added to the list..
