Lyrics

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree,
Merry merry king of the bush is he.
Laugh, Kookaburra, laugh, Kookaburra,
Gay your life must be!

Variation - Kookaburra Sits on the Telephone Wire

Lyrics

Kookaburra sits on the telephone wire
Jumping up and down with his pants on fire
Laugh, kookaburra laugh
Kookaburra hot your pants must be

There is another verse that goes:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see
Laugh, Kookaburra, Laugh.
Save one just for me.

I learned it:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops he can see.
Stop, Kookaburra. Stop, Kookaburra
Save some just for me.

I know two more verses:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Counting all the monkeys he can see,
Stop, Kookaburra, stop, Kookaburra
That's not a monkey, that's me!

Kookaburra sits on the railroad track
Along comes a train and hits him. Smack!
Poor Kookaburra, poor Kookaburra,
That's the end of that.

As kids, we heard it as: "kookaburra sat on the railroad track; along came a train and smashed him flat"

Kookaburra sits on a telephone wire

Kookaburra sitting on the construction site
Along comes a bulldozer and eats his fries
Wail kookaburra wail kookaburra
End your life right now

Kookaburra eats a piece of gum
Sticks to his beak then he chokes
Die kookaburra die kookaburra
Slow your death maybe

Kookaburra sits on the electric wire,
"Where's my wooden branch where I use to retire?",
Cry, Kookaburra, cry, kookaburra,
Hard your life must be.

    About

This is a collection of my favourite songs, rhymes, riddles and poems. Many of them I remember from my childhood and many of them I have discovered since then.

I still sing many of these songs to this day, whether it is with my own children or the children that I teach at school. I find them a great means of stress relief both in and out of the classroom.

Most of these songs should be in the public domain. You will also find that there are multiple versions for each song or rhyme. Please feel free to share your variation, request some sheet music or inform me of any funny songs that should be added to the list..
