Free Drum Lesson Material and Advice

Over many years as a drum teacher I have created a significant amount of material that I have used for my lessons. The drum lesson material that I have created is designed to have a clean and simple layout that is easy to read. The material is designed to become more challenging as you progress through the exercises.

How to make the most of this material

This free drum lesson material is best used with a drum tutor/teacher. While a lot can be learnt through free lessons from sources such as YouTube, a drum teacher will be able to give you the best feedback and advice.

The drum lesson material does not explain how to hold the drum sticks or how to adopt the correct technique. It is designed to provide exercises that focus on learning new drum beats, developing coordination and improving reading skills.

Learning to read music is an excellent skill to have. A drummer who can read music will make themselves much more versatile and will be able to perform in a larger variety of ensembles.

Advice and Ideas

• Start slow. You'll actually learn quicker if you play the beats and rhythms slowly to start off with. Start to speed things up once you can play the exercise correctly.
• Repeat each drum beat until confident. The more you repeat it (correctly of course) the better it will be. Try playing the beat for the duration of a whole song (roughly 3 minutes). Practice playing each beat at least 8 times. 
• Practice with a metronome in order to develop a strong sense of timing (what's a metronome?). If you don't have have a metronome then play along to songs with a steady tempo and same time signature as the exercise.
