5 of the Best Free Music Games Online

Trying to find decent online games for kids can be a time consuming task. There is a lot of junk out there in the World Wide Web and most games that you’ll find are riddled with advertising.

To save you spending hours and hours looking for good quality music games I have compiled a short list of games that are entertaining, educational and well designed.

All of these games are free to get started but some do require you to pay in order to unlock all the areas of the game. They are great for use at home and also in the classroom.


1.   Melody Street – Age: 5 + (younger with assistance)

*Update 2/08/15 - Since writing this article, Melody Street no longer appears to exist as a website. They still have video's on their YouTube channel and also a an App available for iOS.


A beautifully designed and fully interactive web site with loads of games and activities for kids. It is quite simple to use but younger children may need some assistance getting started. 

The site provides a bright and fun introduction to musical instruments and music theory. It’s suitable for use at home and in the classroom. 


2.     Guitar Bots – Age: 8 +

This has to be one of my favourites. If you want to learn guitar then this is a great place to get started. You can believe me that it is awesome, or you can just watch the video below.

You will need to sign up for this and you will also need a real guitar (either acoustic or electric). You can plug your guitar in but you will need some extra equipment. If you don't have the extra equipment then it is best suited for a quiet space and may be difficult for those who want to use it in the classroom.


3.     Quaver’s Marvellous World of Music 
          Age: 8 +

This site has a lot going on. Sometimes too much but once you’ve played around a bit it’s pretty easy to figure things out. Quaver Music provides fun activities for music theory, composition, music history and the science of music. It’s an excellent resource that makes learning music fun and entertaining.

Quaver Music is mainly designed for classroom use but can also be enjoyed from home. It is required that you sign up before playing but doing so is a relatively easy process. 


4.     Incredibox – Age: 8 +

This is super easy to get started and doesn’t take much to create something that sounds good. It’s a simple drag and drop system that uses loops to create funky grooves.

5.     Isle of Tune – Age 8 +

In Isle of Tune you get to build your own town that becomes a musical masterpiece. It combines the fun of building a town and creating your own music. 

This is another great little game that can be used in the classroom. Students can experiment with many of the elements of composition without any prerequisite knowledge of music theory.
